Heinen’s Fine Foods is a family-owned grocery store chain, servicing the greater Cleveland, Ohio area since 1929. In order to expand its bakery and prepared food offerings, Heinen’s needed to expand its facilities. NDBS engineered HVAC and refrigeration systems as part of a $7.7-million, new construction office and refrigerated processing facility.
The 61,000-square-foot building includes 43,000 square feet of refrigerated spaces and 9,100 square feet of office area. On the process side of the facility, NDBS designed the high care assembly room to maintain 38°F. This space is served by a hygienic air handling unit employing desiccant technology for drying the space after washdown. The distribution system utilized KoolDuct in the interstitial space to prevent condensation and Ductsox (MicrobeX) within the process room.
The other areas in the production process consisted of cooler and freezer storage, low risk meat kitchen, WIP coolers, de-pal and de-box, and finished goods. These areas were served by Century DX split systems. Low risk and high care wash rooms, used for equipment and tray washing, were designed for 10 air changes per hour and served by 100% make-up air units and exhaust fans. The facility also included low risk cook rooms including type 1 hoods with variable speed exhaust and conditioned make up air systems for room pressure control.
